One of the greatest Italian poets, Gabriele Dannunzio, renamed the Cathedral square of Pisa (where the Leaning Tower stands) ‘Field of Miracles’ after a real miracle of beauty of its monuments!
This itinerary will lead you throughout the history of the great Maritime Republic of Pisa to let you discover, with our personal guide, the events and historical characters that were at the origin of this magnificent monumental complex. You will learn about theological and cultural concepts that inspired generations of artists and architects who made this square unique. You will visit inside the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, emblem of Pisan Romanesque architecture and the Baptistery; marvel at the precious works of art still beautifully preserved, including the great mosaic of St. John the Evangelist in the apse by Cimabue and the panels of the artistically revolutionary Pulpit, a masterpiece by Giovanni Pisano.
Next you will visit the “Camposanto” (monumental Medieval Cemetery), a mandatory stop for the many European travelers who came to Pisa on the legendary Grand Tour. Here you can observe the restoration work in progress on the Medieval frescos damaged during World War II and find one of the most important collection of existing Roman Sarcophagi. This tour is going to be a jump back to the real Mediterranean Middle Age: a world of colors and images that will come back to life under your eyes.
If you wish we can continue to the Knights’ square, the Medieval political and civic centre of Pisa that still maintains the original features designed by Giorgio Vasari in the XVI c. Your guide will show to you impressive buildings including the majestic Carovana Palace and the Torre dell’Orologio - Medieval prison where Count Ugolino della Gherardesca starved to death -as described in Dante’s Divine Commedy.
