For example, another must see is the town of Erice, with its charming old stone narrow streets and its Gothic Cathdral, situated at 900m. above sea level and with an outstanding 360° view. Not far from Erice, there is another temple to admire – Segesta, the first Greek Temple in Doric style. Or, if you are visiting the south coast, do not miss the archaeological park of Selinunte and the stunning town of Sciacca, of ancient origins. Visit the Enchanted Castle, an eccentric garden filled with naive artworks - spectacle created by Filippo Bentivegna, a local man who emigrated to America in the early twentieth century.
Sciacca boasts also a wide variety of antique churches: Chiesa Madre, San Domenico Church, Chiesa del Carmine & Santa Margherita Church; historical palaces (Palazzo Sterpinto is the most famous) and the beautiful Porta Palermo that together with other famous doors were used to access the city surrounded by walls. Some of the late baroque towns of the Val di Noto, UNESCO Heritage site, are also worth a visit. Particularly Ragusa, Modica, Scicli and Noto, all rebuilt, after 1693, on or beside towns existing at the time of the earthquake, which took place in that year.
They represent a considerable collective undertaking, successfully carried out at a high level of architectural and artistic achievement. Monreale, famous for its magnificent Duomo, one of the greatest sights of Norman Sicily, with a wonderful cloister. The interior of the Cathedral glitters with fabulous Byzantine mosaics, Arabic figurative art and Norman architecture... another must-see. And it is not finished here …
